My Mother Marion worked here in 1983. The Mothers and Sisters were so good to us especially the night my father died. My mother was working that night and the staff from Little.Sisters of the Poor took such great care of our family. God Bless ~ Queen Victoria of Savoy
I had a very dear friend who was able to take up residency at this location. She lived there for the last 1.5 years of her life and was especially appreciative for the wonderful care she received there. I visited her multiple times and was always impressed by how clean everything was in the building. Bea Murphy was a very holy woman and being received into this wonderful place was an answer to her prayers! Bea wrote the prayer on the back of the prayer card entitled: Our Lady of Gentle Love. That prayer card (over a million printed) has been distributed throughout the world. The artist who painted Our Lady was at that time a resident at the Little Sisters of the Poor in Somerville. This facility is the model of kindness, respect, and dignity for every one of its residents. I know this firsthand -- first through Bea and then by my own experience visiting her. ,
If you know of an elderly person on a fixed income that needs around-the-clock nursing care, you should check this place out. Just a warning though, their wait list is very long but with good reason. It is a lovely place with a lovely staff. In addition to the vows of chastity, poverty and obedience, the Little Sisters of the Poor take a vow of hospitality. Their annual Christmas bazaar should not be missed. For 2016 there were baked goods, cake walks, raffles, games and face painting for the kids, and mini fire truck rides.
August 21, 2014 My experience of Little Sisters of the Poor has been uniformly wonderful. My mother, Virginia Stafford, lived in subsidized housing in Boston before she moved to her birthplace- Somerville, MA. In fact, prior to living on Highland Avenue, she lived on Kilmarnock Street in Boston where she feared taking elevators. But, at Little Sisters she found a very welcoming safe, home. I have been to several events there, and everyone seemed so cheerful. Once, when I visited my mother, I took home a book that described various homes that Little Sisters manages. That little booklet was filled with photographs of people with smiling faces. Thank you to all the many people who have taken such good care of my mother during her five-year stay at Little Sisters. Your staff was truly a God-send. Addendum: One particular day when I tried to visit my mother, one of the sisters stopped me from doing so. As I sat outside and reflected on that particular nuns' odd behavior, I silently asked myself this question: did my mother not want to see me and did she relay that message to the nun? - (during a phone call with my mother, I notified her of the time I was refused entrance and she told me that she wasn't aware of my visiting that day). As a result of that earlier visit, Little Sisters of the Poor is effectively demoted to three stars by this writer.
