Mom had a good experience on the short term side but cannot recommend the long term side. There has been massive turnover among the head facility’s nurses and administrative staff. When you ask for a clear answer, you are often told that a position is vacant or that there is a temporary person who always seems to be struggling and says they will get back to you but never do. The care provided has been terrible and unresponsive. No one calls back, and when the front desk transfers calls to the nurses' station, it rings and rings until someone finally picks up, only to hang up on you. This is not a good situation for family members who live or work out of town. For months, they have never been able to tell me the last time my mom had a shower. They claim they sponge her off, but she smells terribly. When I visit her on weekends, I request that she has a shower because of the odor, and they tell me it’s not her shower day and that they will see if they can find time for a CNA to give her a shower. Sometimes they do have time, but often they do not, and when I call my mom during the week, she tells me she did not get a shower despite their assurances that she would on her scheduled day. My mom is paralyzed and cannot move without help, and she has been itching on her back for over three weeks. I checked on her today because she said it has gotten worse, and I saw firsthand how bad it really was. The CNA mentioned they have been treating her with powder, and finally, last night, after much suffering, they put in an order to the doctor for a prescription. All of this could have been avoided if they had showered her regularly and moved her from side to side to allow her skin to heal. It should not have reached this point.

My mother was sent here a week ago from another facility. Since her arrival, I've spoken to a nurse or attendant 3 times! Even though I call every day! If you can get someone to answer the phone, they put you on hold and leave you there, only to come back 15 minutes later, and pickup the phone and speak to you as if they just answered the call! Today, I spent 45 minutes on hold just to finally be routed to a voicemail that I'm sure nobody listens to since this is the 4th time in a week that I've left a voicemail only to have nobody return my call! I don't live in Vero Beach.l, and trying to make sure my mom is okay is impossible with this facility. I spoke to a woman named Jennifer( nursing manager)last week when my mom was moved there last Friday. I explained that I needed to be apprised of any decision for anything concerning my mom. Also telling Jennifer that when my mom was at a facility called SandGate, that trying to get into concerning my mom was impossible because nobody answered the phone, and nobody initiated calls to me at all! Im my mother's medical proxy and her Power of Attorney since she's recently been diagnosed with dementia, and this,or any facility or medical professional must consult with me regarding all decisions concerning my mom!!! Jennifer assured me that that wouldn't be the problem at Vero Beach Care Center. Yet, the problem exists in a big way! It's hard enough on a family when a loved one needs a facility like this to rehab injuries both physically, and mentally! It becomes a thousand times worse 😪!!! ⁷ I am trying to find a skilled nursing facility near my home in the West coast of Florida to facilitate proper care for my mom!
I have been very impressed by the high quality of care my family member is receiving. From my experience, it is clean and lively with music and entertainment for residents.
During his one month stay, my husband had various items stolen or "lost" from his room. Shoes, a lined jacket, his prescription eyeglasses, snacks, and maybe more that we are unaware of. A nurse's assistant pointed at him in front of all the people in a full tv room and shouted "that man pees on himself every day". NEVER has one of many phone messages requesting assistance been returned - not from the nurses's station, not from the administrator, not even from the extension I was transferred to for assistance logging in to the patient portal to pay his bill. And a person is actually fortunate if the phone is answered at all so that a message can even be left. It's never possible to reach a live person other than the receptionist. At least they didn't poison or otherwise kill him.
I had to run all over town on Monday to gather the paperwork needed for my mom’s admission. The woman from admissions told me she had to send it to corporate and would have an answer within 1 to 3 hours, so I went home to wait. It’s now Friday, and I still haven’t heard anything. I’ve called multiple times and left messages, but she never picks up. When I tried to speak with someone in charge, I was routed to a voicemail with no name attached—so I have no doubt my calls are going nowhere. At this point, I’m already out $600 just in doctor’s visits, paperwork, and fees. Today, I’ll be looking into exactly who oversees this facility and filing reports with them, as well as reaching out to my state representative. Caring for my mom as she battles Alzheimer’s is already difficult enough. I don’t need the added stress of being given the runaround, wasting my time and money.
