Shout out especially to the therapy department, both PT and OT, for their excellent rehab program tailored to each individual's needs and goals. They involved me in planning for my needs/hopes besides knee rehab as my core and lower extremities were weak. They started me on a regimen to improve both my knee (reason for admission) and core, etc, so I am better noq after 3 and a half weeks here than I was 4 months ago. Always encouraging but firm in their "stick 2 it" attitude, this is the best group I have worked with. The nursing staff is caring, the aides quickly learned my likes and preferred schedule, and I always felt cared for. I would highly recommend The Newport Rehab, especially following surgery. My only suggestion would be more salad offerings!

I basically blame them for my mother's decline and eventual death. My father had control over her car but he was away for work out of town or oversea. But they didn't change her consistently she got a huge sore really liked like a hole in her back from but being moved or changed cause she was paralyzed from waist down. She was supposed to be there to lean to live with her new situation. They would always try to keep her bed redden and she would complain. I got a call from her at 1am in morning saying she was hanging over the bed and was scared she was gonna fall on her head and that she called for help and was trying to tell and no one was answering so she called me and I had to call the nurse station and tell them to go help my mother cause she was hanging on to keep from falling off the bed.. another day she was sitting in her wheelchair and they let her urine bag overfill it was leaving a trail and pools urine , I got pics ... she was actually very healthy other than she got paralyzed from developing a rare infection in her spinal cord that caused the paralysis ... and then one day she was unresponsive and was sent to er, she had a multiple strokes and we never sent her back but declined she died a month later. And the majority of the staff was horrible rap the head nurse in charge. I'm so angry for not fighting harder to get her out of there... please keep your love ones away from here and all other VDH facilities.
I was really skeptical about this place because I didn’t know anything about it and I was being terribly rushed by Riverside to make a choice. I went by there and I really got skeptical because it was across the street from a funeral home and that became depressing. I looked @ the positive side of her being really close to Riverside due to her medical conditions & chose here and they really were great. I asked my Mom how the food was and she said terrific. I saw what she had for dinner one time and it did look very good. Other places my Mom has been always smelled like urine & it was depressing when you walked in. Every time I walked in the Newport it smelled clean, there was always an activity going on in the dining area, my Mom even participated in bingo and enjoyed it. They have a nice facility however the only downside was I did happen to see some dead bugs in the corners of my mom’s room. Nothing major like a dead roach more like mosquito eaters & a spider but they do come in our own houses & sometimes we miss them so it happens. I was sad when she had to be transported out to the hospital no fault of the facility, but the staff called and asked was she ok the very next day. They also politely and respectfully packed up her stuff and were genuinely concerned when I came to pick it up. The staff has never been rude or uncaring. If she has to go back it will be this facility unless she doesn’t have a private room. My mom doesn’t do well with semi private rooms but that would be the only reason she won’t go back. The therapy team worked diligently with her. The nursing staff tried their best but you have to watch my Mom closely because she will cheek her medication and they caught on and adjusted their methods. They never knew when I was coming because I came on random days and times but they were always the same. Thank you for taking care of her unlike Warwick Forest who is terrible even for an animal to stay there. Great job The Newport please keep up the upkeep of this facility because it has been the best facility thus far.
Melissa Ashby makes you feel like a human and comfortable she is the greatest nurse if every nurse could be that way we would have a wonderful world. India Newman is an excellent aide.
This place is a pit of despair. My Grandma lived at the Newport for 3 months. I visited her many many times, and I was able to personally see the lack of care and respect she was given. Unfortunately we could not remove her from the situation because her youngest son wanted her there. Now she is dead, one month after recovering so much they were reconsidering her hospice status. Also it seriously needs a remodel. And the food is terrible.
