There is a reason the Director and Assist Director at the Baldwin House-Bham both have names that start with an ‘A’ because I called them the A-Team, Annette and Angela. They (and the Baldwin House-Bham family) have helped reduced the stress in my life considerably. My mother, who lives in Louisiana, had a stroke in Mar 2021. Managing her care from Michigan, 1300 miles away, has been very stressful. I needed a Plan B and thought my only option was a skilled nursing facility. A friend suggested I visit the Baldwin House. As soon as I walked in, I was given a warm smile and welcome by Mary Lou. Throughout the entire tour I kept having to close my mouth because it was nothing like I was expecting. It was clean, warm, welcoming, with a theatre room, an exercise room, a craft room, a chapel, a free laundry room on every floor and even a small dollar store. Annette and Angela kept saying, we are here for you, and the Baldwin House- Bham team absolutely was! Whatever I needed to make my mother’s transition to Michigan smooth, they were there helping me along the way. One day I was so stressed and overwhelmed about the physical move (should we drive, should we fly, what things should I pack, do I need to put her stuff in storage, etc) that I stopped by, sat down in the office and just started to cry. I was dealing with a lot that day. The A-team was so comforting and reassuring, just get her here and we’ll take care of the rest. I was concerned because of the level of care she needed, but there is a great team of caregivers, an associated pharmacy for her meds, an amazing doctor (Dr. Sarafa), and a PT/OT staff all coming to her. Everything has been great, Reggie made sure my mother’s place was absolutely beautiful when she arrived. Barb gave my mother time to settle in, then talked with her to see what her interests are. Shantel (from The Medical Team) has been encouraging my mother with her exercises, which is so helpful when you are recovering from a stroke. Her team treats my mother with love and care, which helps give me peace of mind when I’m not there. I’m very happy to have my mother close while encouraging her recovery for greater independence. 💕
This place is pitiful. I just found out that my grandfather was not given dinner one of the nights this week. For the THOUSANDS of dollars we are paying to have him stay there, in “good care”, it is disturbing that this place “ran out of food” and “some of the residents didn’t get dinner”. On top of it all, my grandfather wasn’t notified about the situation, staying awake hungry, expecting his food. How does this staff sleep at night knowing they are STARVING these elderly people??? Disgusting.
Baldwin House Birmingham recently refused to renew the lease of Dorothy Conrad in retaliation for notifying her fellow residents that they’d been improperly charged a parking fee for years. Refusing a lease renewal to punish a lessee for raising a legitimate issue is reprehensible and violates the values Baldwin House claims it stands for in its promotional literature.
Staff is rude & racist toward other staff members who are African American. It saddens me that people still act this way. Diversity training/in service is needed.
