While I don’t have extensive experience with nursing homes, my time interacting with the staff at McHarrie Place, where my grandparents received care, left a lasting impression. From what I observed, the care provided was not only compassionate and personal but also deeply heartwarming. There were several staff members who treated my grandparents as though they were their own family, and I cannot overstate how much their kindness and dedication meant to us. They went above and beyond in countless ways, offering support and comfort that truly made a difference.

My mom and dad had the privilege of calling McHarrie Place their home for almost 3 years. The management staff, nursing and support staff are amazingly caring, competent people. The staff truly cares about their residents as individuals. Acts of true kindness were too many to count. Syracuse Homes at McHarrie Place must be very careful in their hiring practices. Practitioners like Helen, Debbie, Victoria and Trevor and so many others are true gems. Thank you for your outstanding care!
My grandparents both resided at Syracuse Homes for a few years. Every time we visited the home, the staff always felt like an extension of our family. They knew my grandparents intimately and consistently provided great care and responded to all of their needs. It’s so special when you know that the team truly understands their personalities and they can keep them positively engaged, even in some of the most difficult times. I know my entire family will miss the Syracuse Homes family greatly as both grandparents have now passed on. Thank you for the tremendous care that you provided!
I am so impressed by the way my inlaws were treated at McHarrie Place. Having spent ten days myself trying to assist them in their previous residence, I know how exhausting and frustrating it can be to remain patient and kind. The nurses AND the non-medical staff are remarkable. Not only was their care excellent, but their every demeanor showed that they hire people for their kindness as well as their skills. Bravo! And thank you.
I have been a paramedic since 1975, and have worked for many years in large cities like New York City and Los Angeles. Consequently, I have been in a large number of different nursing homes. In 1988 I returned to my family roots in Central New York, and have worked as a paramedic in Oneida, Madison, Onondaga and Cayuga counties. This has allowed me to spend the last 32 years becoming familiar with the upstate New York nursing establishments. Fortunately, I have seen no regional adult residences as substandard as some of the worst places that I have seen in the megacities. Nonetheless, there are a few local facilities that I would never want to be a resident in. The good news is that there are many good and proficient nursing facilities in the area, as well as some excellent ones. The best facilities put an extra effort into demanding that their staff maintain a professional and compassionate demeanor toward all residents and visitors. Each (and every) upstate facility, however, has many kind employees who do their very best to assist their residents through the most frail and vulnerable period of their lives. Whether the adult facility is categorized as Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care, or a Skilled Nursing Facility, the persons who choose to work at these centers are some of the finest human beings amongst us. Their work is both physically and emotionally demanding. Cheering up the lonely, re-answering the forgetful, re-cleaning the incontinent and comforting the grieving take special skills, fortitude and, often, generous love. Decades before their deaths, my parents were very proactive at planning for the day that they would need to be in a nursing facility. They decided that living in the greater Syracuse area would place them closest to most of their children. Based on my work-related experiences, I was very subjective about this. The two best Skilled Nursing Facilities in the area, in my opinion, are Franciscan Villa and Syracuse Home. As Francisca Villa’s residents consist only of retired nuns, the choice for my parents seemed simple to me. Along with other family members who were familiar with Syracuse Home, we were able to convince my parents to hope to someday become residents there. My parents were wise enough to remain on the independent McHarrie Towne’s waiting list for seven years, until there was finally an opening there. The extended family fully enjoyed years of visiting them in their independent residence. The facilities, the activities, the maintenance staff, and the neighbors made for a pleasant living experience until, in their 90s, they required a higher level of round-the-clock care. After moving into Syracuse Home, my parents were rewarded for the wisdom and patience associated with choosing that nursing facility. With my parents as residents, I spent far more time in Syracuse Home than I ever had before. While I already had a pre-existing, strong positive impression of the establishment, I was even further impressed at the consistent absolute cleanliness, the detailed always-changing decorum, the variety of activities, the thorough and dignified personal assistance, and the excellent medical evaluation and nursing care. The aspect of Syracuse Home that impressed me the most was the genuine, loving and kind attitude of each, and every, employee. After a diversified and exciting life, my parents, in their final years, received what they deserved – talented, patient, and cheerful caregivers. On those days that our family members were unable to visit, we all knew that our parents were in good hands. We were promptly advised of any issues, and were included in all relevant decisions. In hindsight, I am so happy that, many years ago, I suggested that my parents strongly consider living in this adult community. Our family will never forget the meticulous care and the kindness that the staff of Syracuse Home provided to our parents.
