My mother is a resident on the Serenity Unit. She has dementia and always is treated with dignity and respect by every member of the staff. We are kept informed by the outstanding nursing team about their mother’s condition consistently. The CEO has zoom meetings on a weekly basis to update us on any new information. The atmosphere is friendly and helpful. There is not a department in this facility that is not there to make the veterans lives better and to show them how much they are appreciated for their service to our country.
This review is from 2019. I have not been back to the facility since my Grandfather passed away from Covid19 in 2020. I am somewhat of a daily visitor to the New Jersey Veterans Home in Paramus, as my grandfather is a resident. In my opinion it is sad how our veterans are being cared for. The facility is very outdated, furniture is all old and worn, and the bedrooms are like hospital rooms from the 60’s. The resident bathrooms are horrible (4 residents share one bathroom). The facility is also very understaffed, leaving residents to be neglected. In addition, almost every family member I have talked to said their loved one was walking prior to their arrival at this nursing home. Due to the staffing issue, residents are forced to stay in wheelchairs and not allowed to walk. Physical therapy is a joke as well. Most of the staff members do not speak good English and I have also caught several of them in lies (saying my loved one went to physical therapy, when in reality they didn’t). Also, beware, if your loved one gives staff a difficult time, they will drug them. Moving into a facility is a big adjustment to these men and women. They need time to adjust and require care, attention, and positive reinforcement. Not to have drugs shoved down their throats when they do not conform within a week. This facility needs major updates, a staffing overhaul, and additional staffing. Until then, avoid at all costs!
My experience with this place has been nothing but negative. I’ve seen the review about this being a clean facility? The units are constantly being shut down for another infection or air borne illness. In the 3 years that my loved one has been a resident, I still haven’t seen one custodian clean whether it’s day or night. I wonder if they ever clean at all. The floors are dirty and sticky, the furniture worn and old and it smells horrible. It is sad that this is what we think our vets are worth. The facility is old and dated. It is in need of repair and remodeling. My biggest complaint is how short staffed they are and the neglect of the residents as a result of it.
My father was a resident of the Veterans Home from May, until he died, in July 2018. I wish to express my thanks to all of the staff that served in the K-L wing. I found the medical personnel and all of the support staff to be of the highest caliber. They treated my father with professionalism and respect. As a daily visitor I never saw residents left neglected. The staff is caring, empathetic and attentive to their needs. I would strongly recommend the facility to anyone considering residency.
