The Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky is a great spot for an early morning stroll, especially if you enjoy historical pieces like tanks, cannons, and old buildings. As an early riser, I found it to be the perfect place to explore during a quiet morning. There are plenty of plaques scattered around that provide interesting information about the area, adding some context to the surroundings. The only downside is that some areas could use a little maintenance or gardening to bring them up to par. Other than that, it’s a peaceful and educational spot that I was lucky to stumble upon while on vacation. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!

This place may be run through the state of ohio, but it's no different than any other place, my dad who is a veteran says this place is like a prison and i believe he is right they make it so difficult to get into & when u do seems all u are is $$$ to them, i don't think a place that says it's for veterans. Should be taking money of any sort from our veterans!!!!! they need a refuge to just breathe they have earned it & i think Ohio or any state that has these type of places should make a space in their budget these verterns gave life and limbs even for our freedoms what do we give them in return ??? here lets take your $$ & even charge for a haircut if you try to argue the point they say yeah, they are the cheapest around which is b.S that's your arguing point, not a very good one. something has to change for those who gave their lives for us , can we not give back to them ???? many dont have family members who care or would do ALL the paperwork or have a place for them to go live , and yes its ridiculous but for those who need help this should be a safe haven for those in need just saying !!!!
My father was transferred to their Memory Care unit from another facility which was newer but the care was terrible. Well the difference has been night and day. He is received 100% better care at the Ohio Veterans Home! They keep him clean, engaged and he’s gaining back the ten pounds he lost in the other facility! The staff is so friendly, caring and professional. He doesn’t ask to go home all the time like he used to. He has adjusted so well because of the care and attention he has received. The staff keeps our family up to date on everything concerning my dad and we are able to call anytime of the day or night to check on him. We visit often on various days/times and all the caregivers we have met have been wonderful! They really know how to do memory care. Today my dad is going on a ‘field trip’ for a scenic ride and for milkshakes with the other residents and the wonderful activities director! We are so thankful to everyone at the Ohio Veterans Home.
Our family has been very happy with all aspects of the Ohio Veterans Home, from the admission process, nursing care, activities, etc. It is a very stressful decision to move a loved one into any facility but having someone like Kim in Admissions made it less stressful. Kim was great to work with. She was very responsive, kept us updated on the admission process, and explained things in a clear, easy to understand manner. She was extremely helpful not to mention caring. Once admitted, everyone there made us feel welcome; the maintenance staff who helped set up the room, the activities director, the nursing supervisor, and the aides were all great. Over the past few months since my dad has been admitted, he has been well taken care of and his family is very pleased with the level of care and attention he receives as well as the updates on his care and well being.
Mother was terrified of placing Dad, of course. We had no other choice. Each and every one of the staff that we met from the first point of contact to the introductions to the nurses, activities therapist to the food delivery, we were so impressed. Mother is very critical and was a nursing supervisor for many years. We left with peace knowing that we feel he is in good hands. Thank you so very much for taking care of our father and husband. He is and was the greatest man. Facility was clean, organized, and comfortable. Good food in the dining room for $4 per person including drink and dessert. Yes, we had dinner with Dad. Daily activites. I could go on and on.
