The oaks is a nice place and the staff seems ready to help. The establishment was clean. It was nice to see a chapel as well as a movie theater. Certainly a place to check out if looking for a place for a loved one.

My sister in law called and asked that her and my wife's mother was to be clean and ready for the family to celebrate her 87th birthday. When they arrived she was not clean. Her shirt was filthy, and her hair was so greasy and disgusting. This is unacceptable. Hospice was to come on Tuesday and Thursday to bathe her but that didn't happen. The techs should take care of her hygiene! The amount of money she pays to be taken care of is outrageous! Things need to change!
I just want to say what a Godsend this place has been to me and my Dad. My dad is in the Horizons Memory Care wing and the staff has been amazing. He was previously "asked to leave" another local Memory Care facility due to behavior problems associated with Sundowners after only a month. I was at my wits end. When I talked to the staff at The Oaks about what was going on they assured me that it was not anything they had not seen in other Alzheimer's patients and they would work with him. Their goal is to make sure that this is the last place he would have to be moved to and could live out his life without disruption of moving to a nursing facility. Everyone there has gone out of their way to learn about his life prior to Alzheimer's so they can better adapt his activities to things he likes to do. You can tell how truly caring they are and the genuine concern and care they give my dad. The interaction of the staff with all the patients is wonderful. They are very patient and treat everyone with respect. Dad has been there 3 months now. It took me a little while to relax and realize that they have this under control but it is an amazing feeling to know that when I cannot be there I do not have to worry about him. I could go on and on but for those looking for a place to put a loved one when the tough decision comes I would recommend visiting the Oaks. When you start looking do your homework and make sure that wherever you go there is enough staff and that they are trained well. A place can look great but not have the proper care and staff to take care of your loved one. The Oaks has both.
9 times out of 10, when I call, I can't get anyone to answer the phone, so I've left messages, only for them to not be returned after specifically asking for a return phone call. There is usually nobody around during the week or up on the floor. The nurses are stretched so thin that they can't get to all the patients, let alone answer the phone up there. Medications are not given on time, the people in the home are nasty and gossip to one another about each other, and they steal money from the elderly while they are asleep. This is convenient to Pooler and all it has to offer. That is a positive. Please pray for this home. My mother is in it and there are a LOT of struggles.
The caregiving at the Oaks at Pooler is exceptional. They have independent living with assistance as well as a memory care unit, fully staffed with caring and supportive attendants. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and I can’t say enough about how much the staff takes an interest in each and every resident. I recommend them all the time tofriends who are looking for this level of care for their family members and will continue to do so.
