The best people, a seriously state of the art facility, and excellent medical treatment- what could be better? This facility not only cares about the medical state of their residents, but also their social and emotional well being. My Mom was living alone during the pandemic, and now she feels safe, loves the food, and is so happy to have many loving people. We know we made the right decision with Eastern Star.
My 93 year old mom fell and broke her hip and was at Eastern star for a few weeks. I must say that the facility is very clean and cozy and the rooms were very large with large bathrooms. The rehabilitation department were wonderful ! Everyone there was so nice....The nurses that tended to my mom were also wonderful, especially Wendy and Cheryl. So great and so informative when needed answers. The food was also very good as well. I would highly recommend this place if ever a need!!
I would like to tell you about my horrible experience with the NJ Eastern Star Home in Bridgeway NJ. The hospital transferred my father to that facility. They had time to look over his records and accepted the transfer. When we got to his room, it was obvious that the room had not been cleaned. The toilet was filthy and there were no toiletries. In addition, the pillowcase was dirty, and the phone was also filthy. I pointed it out to the staff member in the room and there was very little reaction. This leads me to believe it is not unusual. That should have been a clue that this facility was not going to work out. The next day, after about 12 hours, we receive a call that he was being discharged. They said he would not be eligible because he would not make any progress with rehab. I would like to know how they determined that in 12 hours. Why would they not give him a chance to improve. I wanted to speak to someone clinical to ask that questions, but no one would speak with us. Only the admission/discharge person would speak with us. I left multiple messages for Lee Traynor to call me back, but she did not. I email her and Dr. Giakas and neither called me, even though I told them it was urgent. They did not even call the next day. We were given no time to investigate another facility. We had to scramble to find a facility that would take him. Based on this experience, I would not recommend anyone put a loved one in this facility. If your loved one has an urgent matter, you cannot be sure that you will be able to speak with someone. I know I would not want my father in a facility where urgent matters are not taken seriously.
My husband and I are quite frustrated caregivers. The admissions process for short term respite care was a waste of time. I clearly shared with the Admissions Director BEFORE applying that my mother is a blind, diabetic who goes to dialysis three times a week. There was no mention of limited beds, “person of interest” categorizations, or other guiding state laws until AFTER I submitted medical, financial records, etc. When asked to provide the rationale behind the admission rejection, I was told it was based on guidelines. I ask to be provided the guidelines and still have not received them. I called the Administrator and she in a nutshell told me to find it myself. It’s unfortunate that I this faculty is regarded highly by most and may even surpass state health guidelines (No other facility in our experience cited such guidelines) but the staff couldn’t have offered a more supportive responses. This privately run facility has every right to admit or deny the admission of any applicant, but some explanation to help us better understand the process and help us prepare to apply to other facilities would have been nice.
