The staff are truly caring and compassionate. They are knowledgeable, attentive, and go above and beyond to ensure they have the care possible.
The facility is clean, smells clean, spacious hallways, nice staff, many places to explore and we loved the theater. Having a chef on site is a plus we love that aspect. Love the kitchenettes in every room and the laundry service. The option to bring a pet or have pets visit is also a plus for us as well.
Moved my mom and stepdad here in 2019. He passed away less than a year later. I moved mom to another facility in Nov 2023. The care had gotten bad---mom has bad vision and only the front desk staff were helping her find her room; it was clear she wasn't getting her meds; and no one bothered to tell us that they found her outside at 5:30am several times. Her room was filthy---there was thick mold in her sink on more than 1 occasion despite me asking the staff to help her with her dishes. Staff? You can circle the building 3 times and not run into 1 staff member. Amanda Diehl, the current director doesn't give 2 hoots about anything but her reputation. One of her email newsletters said to call her cell if we weren't able to reach staff. Well, after calling the building for over an hour one evening and not getting an answer, we called Amanda's cell twice. Never got an answer, a return call, or an apology. Maybe things have improved since I moved my mom, but I doubt it. The building is beautiful, but looks can be deceiving. If you care about your loved one, look at other facilities, visit often, and pay close attention when you're there. After moving my mom, I spoke with the Office of Aging, Legend's care line or whatever they call it, and the CEO, but I doubt it's helped to make any improvements.
My father-in-law, who has dementia, was here in November on respite care. He lived in a local retirement community, and after an ER visit he suddenly needed to move from independent living, where his wife was his caregiver, to a personal care level, but his current community didn't have a bed immediately available. When he arrived to Legend from the hospital via ambulance van he was in worse condition than expected but accepted by Legend anyway. We later had several staff members tell us that they questioned whether the level of care he required could be met at Legend but they were told to admit him anyway. He was officially there for 2 weeks, but spent 5 of those days in the hospital ICU because of sepsis which developed from an unrecognized urinary tract infection. Apparently no one on staff noticed he wasn't urinating, had a fever, or was generally ill until he became unresponsive and they thought he had a stroke...and no one could tell us how long he was unresponsive in his wheelchair before they noticed. In the 9 days he was actually at Legend before the ICU, he had at least 3 falls, one of which sent him to the ER, and one that WE had to report to the staff. We walked into his room and found him sitting on the concrete floor, shivering, naked except for his brief, in a puddle of his own urine. Thankfully, a bed was available at his retirement community when he left the hospital ICU, but regardless we would NOT have taken him back to Legend. I think the nursing staff, or at least some of them, are trying their best but they're underststaffed and unsupported by administration. The poor care of residents and disregard for their safety is the biggest concern, but overall respect for them is missing as well. His bed was never made, there was clothing in his room thst wasn't his (it was labeled with another person's name), some of the bedding we supplied and some of his clothes were missing when we moved him out, and we had to throw away the rest of his bedding and some of his clothes because the Legend laundry service turned them pink. It was also rare to see the residents being supervised; they were generally left to wander around on their own. Michelle gave a great tour and had us excited about the care my father-in-law would receive, but beware - it's just a sales pitch. Michelle and Amanda, the director, both ignored numerous voicemails and emails and expressed no sincere concern about the residents. Do not take your loved ones here.
