It seemed like such a great solution when my mother with Alzheimer's could no longer live on her own. The building was beautiful and the couple who ran it seemed nice. And my mother in safe hands. At least that's what we thought. When my mother started showing wandering behavior - and that is what 7 in 10 elderly people with dementia do - the Guest House turned out not to be such a safe place. The care couple was unwilling to provide safety to wandering residents. The staff let her walk outside alone even though they knew there was a risk of getting lost or falling. There were no staff to help her. In fact, there is no daytime activities for the residents in the Guesthouse. The residents have to entertain themselves. Occasionally there are activities and the press is present with a lot of drumming. 'Look at us doing great work for the elderly with dementia'. Het Gastenhuis is a commercial, for-profit company. They prefer to see residents with early onset Alzheimer's and the associated full budget. As soon as more care is needed and therefore more staff, Het Gastenhuis requests transfer to a closed institution. This way, a room is available again for a new resident with early-stage Alzheimer's with a large budget for Het Gastenhuis.

Our mother was the second resident in Het Gastenhuis Westbliek. She had a wonderful time here and was lovingly cared for and guided. It was a nice last place to live with a homely atmosphere.
