My mother-in-law has been at Gurwin for the past 2+ weeks. Her care has been wholly Inadequate and I would describe it as negligent.. We have have to go every day to make sure she’s fed. No matter what we say, in terms of our minimal personal requests, none are met. We have provided full sets of clothing, that have not been utilized. On her way in from the hospital, her only set of teeth were lost. We have found her at the nursing station with her head propped on a pillow on the table. We have pictures of all this and video as well. This place needs to be investigated as it is taking money from people and not delivering the services they are paid for. Elderly people deserve respect and dignity. My mother-in-law is in our care and we are going to do everything we can to make sure she is cared for properly. Places like this need a wake up call! The memory care unit demonstrated to me that the nursing care was inadequate for my mother. The PA refused to validate my concerns about my mother’s wheezing and fatigue. I took my mother to an outside doctor to find out she had pneumonia!! Totally unacceptable. They are so short staffed on that floor that basic needs are ignored. My mother always smelled of urine when I came to visit. I have to have her transferred to another caring facility. Dementia patients there sit by the table for hours! Staff can deal with patients. It’s hard work and they barely have enough staff to watch patients in that dining room. The courtyard outside is nice to look at but that all the patients can do unless a visitor comes to take their loved one outside. Activities are a joke. The recreation therapist makes a snack for the patients. That’s the activity. The screen is loud. It’s not a calm environment. One patient got their wheelchair dragged back the role table saying they wanted to go to their room. Then she said to me- get far far away from this place. The food is okay. Terrible care there. Used to have a good name. Now it’s awful. If someone needs full care which is the only reason I placed my mother there forget any kind of compassionate care.
I highly recommend Gurwin in Commack, where my mom has resided for over a year, receiving exceptional care from the entire staff. Compared to her previous facilities, Gurwin stands out for its warm and welcoming atmosphere, evident from the moment you enter. The staff treats residents like family, providing personalized attention and care. The facility is always immaculate, and the diverse activities keep residents engaged. I'm truly grateful to have found Gurwin, where my mom receives the care and compassion she needs and deserves. Forever grateful!!! Dawn Kearney
I truly am grateful for this facility and their staff. My dad has been here for over 4 years and we are blessed with those who care for him. It brings me so much peace to know how much his nurses, aides and social worker Jill care for him. I feel that they take care of my dad like he was theirs. Thank you to all the staff and especially his social worker who always takes him on little dates and keeps us informed consistently. We appreciate you all so much and hope the recognition goes a long way. ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My mother, Eve, was a resident of Gurwin Assisted Living for 15 months. She moved in 1 week before her 97th birthday. She immediately adjusted and reaped all that Gurwin had to offer. The staff were so welcoming and supportive. Within a few short months, she was asked to be part of the new calendar. She looked forward to the variety of activities each day. Her fellow residents were warm and friendly. I found it absolutely amazing how my mom just melded into the Gurwin community. She discovered her “hidden” art talents. It is so heartwarming to have some of those projects displayed in my home. I am so blessed to have those memories of my mom at Gurwin. It brings me solace during this difficult time.
