I am grateful to live at The Fellowship Community. I knew that Fellowship members were encouraged to provide service to one another, and the idea appealed to me. One afternoon per week, I happily provide companionship care to our most fragile members who reside on our Care Unit. As an independent member, I live in a lovely, two bedroom apartment in a lodge that has 10 apartments, and a spacious Common Room where we gather, for example: potlucks, films on our large screen T.V. and a meditation group. A few things that I particularly enjoy are the pottery workshop, my raised garden bed in a community garden, and easy access to the Duryea Farm. We’ve recently acquired 3 dwarf goats, and I delight in visiting them to watch their antics. I’ve observed that the people who are drawn to either work or live here appear to be highly conscious, intelligent and kind individuals. We recently celebrated Thanksgiving, and there was no separation between members, the staff we consider “co-workers” (many of whom choose to also live on our 80+ acre campus), and administration. Fellowship is truly a community.

The Fellowship has been a godsend for our family. My mother is cared for with kindness and thoughtful attentiveness. There is incredible music, performances, movies, and book groups for my Mom to engage with. The location is beautiful, and I love taking her to the farm that is on the grounds to see where some of her food comes from! We feel very lucky that when the crisis of my father’s sudden passing hit us, that there was such a great place for her to live and rebuild herself after the tremendous loss.
I have been living here 6 years now and not only am I happy, but my kids are too. Its appeal to me originally was the opportunity to live in a home-like friendly place and have a meaningful, productive rest of my life. I can be in the company of others as often as I like or be off on my own for a long walk or doing nothing in solitude. The grounds are woodsy and natural with small gardens tended by residents. Meals are wholesome, delicious and made by a staff eager to please. Volunteer opportunities abound and you can be as involved as you want to be. I have become the inhouse seamstress, so it you have mending to be done, I'm here. The decision to live in Fellowship Community has proven to be the best one for me.
My years living at the Fellowship Community, have been some of the happiest and most fulfilling of my life: wonderful, interesting people of all ages; a rich social, intellectual and cultural life, many opportunities to contribute actively and meaningfully in the life and work of the community, beautiful, natural surroundings, including a working organic, vegetable and dairy farm, great homegrown, food, sensitive, skilled and loving caregivers and employees, responsive administration. Having young children in my life again, is a special joy, and the surrounding 80 acres of woodland, gardens, meadows, and streams bring inexhaustible inspiration. Our larger community hosts conferences, and attracts teachers, speakers and performers of international renown throughout the year. I can imagine no other place on earth, which could so completely satisfy my every need and promise me a rich and fulfilling life, even as my physical capacities and health decline with age.
I am very happy living at the Fellowship Community, because I feel so enriched by the human encounters, and I feel especially at home here because I can share with others, my spiritual interests and my lifelong interest in Rudolf Steiner's Anthroposophy. Before I became a resident Member, I had the rich experience of working as a volunteer and later as a Coworker/caregiver. During that time I realized that recognizing the human being as also a spiritual being increased my respect, admiration and love for people in old age, especially those suffering illness, incapacity, and dementia. Now that I myself am getting older, I feel so appreciative for what I learned from the wise old people I cared for previously, and I feel trust and confidence that I will receive sensitive and loving care in the future, regardless of my condition. I appreciate the Fellowship's rich cultural life, opportunities for study, to work with animals and plants at the farm, and to serve on committees.
