Today at 11:45am I arrived at the gate to visit my grandmother. I didn’t have her room number upon entering and the guard was very rude to me. I tried giving her name end he cut me off and became agitated with me saying “doesn’t matter you need to know her room number to get in.” I explained to him it was my grandma’s birthday and only my 2nd time visiting and I couldn’t recall her room number (she is in assisted living and has dementia and can’t work a phone so it’s not like I can call her). He was able to call someone and get her room information in a quickly manner to assist me but he was annoyed that he had to make a call. I told him he was being unprofessional and could come off more kindly. I understand the security concern but more friendly gate staff would be appreciated

At first I was really happy about this establishment for my grandmother. However I am extremely disappointed with a recent experience. I was on the phone with my grandma she started speaking incoherently and said she was feeling faint and funny. I called the community to get in touch with security so someone could do a wellness check on her. After a half hour, NO ONE had gone to check on her or called to give me an update. I had to call a local family member to go there and check on her. Only when my family member got there, did they get any support. I understand that there are multiple buildings and hundreds of residents but you’d think there would be a faster protocol to provide support for our aging population.
I am so disgusted with the Charlestown Community! My father, John Fahey in Caton Woods will be 100 years old on April 23. My sister who visits him frequently said on 03/19/23 she could not find anyone on my Dad's floor to help her so she could take him to an emergency Dr appointment because is leg was very swollen, red and hurt to the touch. And, he's wheelchair bound. By the time my sister got him to the Medical apt, the PA wanted a sonogram on his leg as it could be blood clot. My sister had to take the script to Caton Woods and the person she talked to made a big fuss about the order being "Stat" which we think was taken off the script. To date, my Dad has not had the sonogram (3/21/23) and you cannot reach anyone at Charlestown who knows why or the condition of my Dad. All your fancy books and literature you provide customers is nothing more than a bait and switch. You don't have enough employees to manage the patients and care is at a minimum. Charlestown certainly gets enough money from patients. Just plain awful! Kathy Counts
I love living at Charlestown where I have great neighbors; wonderful friends; dedicated staff; choice of 7 restaurants every day of the week; and a beautiful campus. I can walk to all buildings using enclosed, climate-controlled hallways. My favorite walkways are the two that cross over the Herberts Run Creek that runs through the campus. I feel like I'm walking through the tree tops. The view of protected woodlands on either side of the creek is great from the windows in my apartment and even better when I use the walkways. There's also medical care and rehab service on campus.
My mother has been living here for over 10 years. When she first moved in the place was great. Had excellent food, ambulance on site, convenience store on the grounds. There were celebrations every holiday. Stuff for all the family. We felt we made the right choice. Fast forward and all those amenities are gone. And not because the current state of a pandemic. They have been gone for a couple of years. I have seen altercations between the food staff and family members where threats of physical violence were made by the employee. The final straw that made me want to share is the current situation my mother finds her self in. Charlestown suggested my mom be moved to assisted living. The move was necessary, she had been in the hospital several times. Her mobility and memory are getting worse. The move came at the worst time. We had to put it on pause due to the pandemic. At this time my mom has not been in her own bed more than two nights. From just after Christmas till middle of May she had either been in the hospital or Dorsey Hall (extended rehab). Once it was safe to move her from rehab, in May, they tried to move her not to her new place but another wing less contaminated with Covid. They tried quoting rules and regulations from the Governor at 5:30 pm Friday. At 7:30 am that persons boss called to say she could be quarantined in her new room in assisted living. They had moved some essentials in already. They didn’t use the moving company. They, themselves moved the stuff from HR (Herbert Run) to CW (Caton Woods). There was still 60% to move. That brings us to yesterday. The moving company and I tried to move my mothers remaining items to her. This date was picked and agreed upon by all parties. The plan was to have the moving company move the items from her old place to the new building and the Charlestown employees would move the rest upstairs to her new place. The moving company did their part. The problem is that nobody from Charlestown was there to do their part. My mothers belongings, including two safes, are sitting on a loading dock. I can’t get anybody to answer my call. Nobody knows anything. The move in manager and her boss can’t be reached. They transfer you around from voice mail to voice mail. Then there is the billing. They trying to charge her for all three places. They refuse to send emails. I’ve asked them to respond in email so I can have some form of documentation. Update: August 18. Still no call from a big boss there. Got a call from the boss of the building she lives in. The original person in charge of the move in called to... I don’t know why she called. She made no apology, didn’t ask how things are or to explain what went wrong. She just said I’m back and call me if you need anything. And we still can’t visit her. Nobody isallowed in or out. My mom feels like a prisoner. Now two months in I find out they are sending her a bill for $2000.00 for medications that are covered under her insurance and Medicare. Then there is a bill for the pads they put on her bed to block urine. That would seem to be a normal item an assisted living place would have. Or at least be included in the $9000.00 dollars she pays. Part 2. If you are a resident in assisted living and you have an illness and the Dr. at Charlestown cant treat you so you get an appointment with a Dr off the property or go to a hospital don't rely on that helping. My mom is has been treated many times by other Dr and prescribed RX or treatment and it never get administered or filled. What is the point? If they cant treat it and then they send you to get treated why bother. They have to wait till the Dr that couldn't treat them at first agrees to the prescribed treatment.
