I said on the survey: I wanted to take a moment to provide feedback regarding my father’s recent stay at your facility. While I appreciate the kindness of the staff, I have some serious concerns about the responsiveness and attentiveness of care that I hope can be addressed to improve the experience for future patients. One of the biggest issues was slow response times, even in situations that required immediate attention. On one occasion, my father had to have me personally waive someone down just to help him off the toilet because he was on the verge of passing out—this is completely unacceptable for a facility that is supposed to be providing 24/7 care. Additionally, even basic needs like trash removal were handled slowly; his trash can, which contained soiled undergarments, sat unchanged for far too long. While I understand that recovery comes with discomfort, I felt that staff were somewhat dismissive of concerns, often responding with “everything happening is normal.” While some issues may be expected in recovery, that doesn’t mean they should be ignored or minimized, especially when the patient is visibly struggling. A more attentive and proactive approach would make a significant difference. I strongly encourage you to hire additional staff or improve internal procedures to ensure patients are not left waiting for care or essential assistance. Every patient deserves dignity and prompt care, and delays like this could have serious consequences. Thank you for taking the time to consider this feedback. I hope to see improvements in these areas to ensure a safer and more compassionate experience for all patients under your care.

These other recent reviews are dead on accurate. I’m very pleased with the Therapists and Wound Team supporting my Mom … top notch. The nursing staff is woefully inadequate and slow to respond. Last visit my Mom was waiting over an hour in pain for someone to come in response to her buzzer. This is not uncommon and weekends are unbelievably bad. There is also a clear disconnect in communication between what the Therapists want to support any sort of progress and what the nursing staff does or more appropriately doesn’t do. While Burke is better than Carriage Hill in Fredericksburg (thus 2 vs 1 star), which is literally a death trap, that doesn’t make this place acceptable as there is too much to possibly convey here. I’ll also add as others have that the food is not good and the facility does need a significant refresh. To be fair to Burke, I’ve spoken to multiple health professionals and they have consistently said none of these places are good, they are understaffed and underpaid but that should not be the patient’s problem and is unacceptable. The best restaurants don’t base their capacity on number of tables but rather availability of staff to provide the best service and experience. That doesn’t apply to these places from what I’ve seen and that includes Burke.
The staff and the nurses at Burke Lake & Rehabilitation Center are friendly and nice. The instructor who help you with your exercises is fantastic! She takes you down to the gym and brings you back to your room and she make sure that you are alright before she leaves your room. I think the workout instructor’s name is Michelle.
Please do not subject your loved ones to this place. The care is abysmal - patients are ignored, often calling for assistance for HOURS before someone will see them. That is usually followed with an "okay, I'll be right back," not to be seen again for hours. The orders in the patients' charts are completely ignored - medicines not being administered, treatments not being given. An order from a patient's ortho surgeon to receive DAILY wound care for a fracture - they have gone days without cleaning the wound. The patient has developed an infection in the wound because of this - HOW??!! Patient's surgeon AGAIN wrote specific, step by step instructions for wound care yesterday - more than 24 hours later and no one has bothered to check it, even after the patient has asked 3 different people for assistance. Dietary needs/restrictions are not being adhered to, ongoing medical conditions are not being monitored. Signs of concern with patient's congestive heart failure are not being addressed. Is she retaining fluid? Who knows?! It's not like anyone is checking. No one knows who is supposed to be doing what - the physician's assistant may visit once every couple of days, not that there's any point to them visiting. They have done absolutely nothing. There seems to be a sit-em-and-forget-em mentality with the care. There appears to be absolutely no communication between the different roles. Please don't get me wrong - there are a handful of employees here that are amazing. This place truly does not deserve them. The physical and occupational therapy folks are wonderful. Several of the CNAs are fantastic. Sadly though, the bad ones outweigh the good. This facility was highly recommended by a hospital caseworker - I would absolutely never have listened to her had I known what it was really like. I get it - places like this are understaffed, likely under-funded, and sadly this is probably the norm for such a facility. This is my first time experiencing a place like this, and I am absolutely dumbfounded. Oh, PSA - you work in healthcare - do not wear so much freaking perfume!!!
My mother was transferred here for PT. I was told the nursing staff wasn't the best but the Physical therapy department was good. My mother had excellent physical therapists and the wound nurse was helpful, supportive and informative. The nursing staff was horrible. They are incompetent and don't know anything about critical thinking or how to assess for infection. They barely looked at my mom and are basically just pill pushers. The lack of communication is terrible. I left messages for administration but never heard back. The food is horrible. My mom got covid because they put a patient with covid in her room. I ended up calling 911 for my mom.
