My parents stayed here and the staff is warm, helpful, and always willing to help. My parents loved the activities, the social times, and the ambience the vegetation gives. The path by the river was quite enjoyable for my parents who used to be very outdoorsy. I would definitely recommend.

Can you give negative stars? I was there 3 days over Thanksgiving and the lack of care my mother (who is on the first floor in the dementia ward) received was alarming. Her hair was filthy, dandruff was coming off of her like it was snowing. The staff said she missed a shower- that does not open with one missed shower. They didn’t wipe her off when she soiled herself, they did not clean her face or give her prompts to brush her teeth at bedtime. They stuffed her deceased roommates soiled linens and other items in her closet. There was feces on the wall and floor of the bathroom as well as on her items. They use Purell to clean hands instead of soap and water- my mother had feces on her hands! They can’t keep her clothes separate from other residents clothing. They lost several pairs of her shoes. I did raise complaints and was never responded to. They instead told my sibling that they would be implementing changes. I was back at Christmas and now my mom has holes in her teeth. This is bad but worse for me (and my mother) no one on the staff thought that was important to tell us. I do not believe they are giving her prompts or helping her with tasks of day to day living. This place is horrible. If you want your loved one treated with dignity and respect look elsewhere.
If you care about your loved ones, stay very far away from Brookdale. We've paid them over QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS (about $300K) over the last 3 years in "memory care", and they clearly are not able to care for residents in memory care and are in it for just the money. I was fooled and it was the worst mistake I've ever made for me, my dad and my family. Feel free to contact me directly if you want more details.
We were extremely diligent in our evaluation of Assisted Living locations in making our decision having visited 9 other communities before choosing Brookdale Vernon Hills. Many factors were at play. Foremost, because of our family member's social personality, we liked that assisted and independent living residents are integrated in the dining room and all social events. The dining room can cut foods and butter bread before a meal is presented at the table to afford dignity to our family member who has partial paralysis due to a stroke. The apartment has a large bathroom which is an important feature for daily living. Medications are managed by the contracted pharmacy and passed by the nursing staff. The variety of well-appointed public spaces outside the primary apartment was another draw for when family members visit and gather.
My wife has been here for over two years. She is on the first floor. I visit often. Her television will not work and hasn’t t for two weeks. I’ve asked four times for someone to come in and fix it. If it cannot be done please tell me. If I need a new television I’ll get one. If I need to get a technician in here to do the work tell me and I will get one. We pay $10930 per month. We should be able to get this fixed promptly. —-Jim DeSanto room 11
