My father is in one of the locations and for reasons I won't say who or where but I would stay away from Brookdale I understand being short handed for positions but we pay for descent food not burned and all residents complain about the same things. They dont clean the apartments at anytime it's been months but they charge for it . They leave medication on the carts in the halls for anyone to have access. It's sad . And yes I take the time to clean up his apartment so he's not living in filth. Good luck.

My Mother has been at Brookdale in Rancho Mirage CA for about 18 months. It is a very nice place and everyone I’ve meet has been so nice and caring. The facility is lovely and kept up very well, however things have changed in the last few months. Rent has been raised Twice since she moved in, First raise was 11% and this past increase was 17%, that seems outrageous especially for senior living. But even worse since the last increase the food quality has severely declined, so many complaints at the monthly meetings. Their answer is it’s corporate! The meals were so good at first, now they give you a tiny portion of protein. Not enough to sustain you for the day. My Mother eats very little anyways, but she does not feel it is filling enough. They have a white fish that many complain they cannot eat it. This just seems very cruel when you are feeding the elderly, most don’t drive and they pay $$$ to be there My Mom pays $7,000 a month. Seems like she should be able to get good meals. Everything else is great, but meals are a big part of her day and social time. I know everything has gone up but you can’t raise the rent by almost 30% and serve good quality meals.
Reviews are about experiences and opinions. They are meant to inform and educate. Here are my experiences and my opinions. I solely intend to keep others safe by conveying what my family has been through. Here is my story and because of what has transpired, my concern with Brookdale's choice of employees. My father was sent for rehab at a facility in Franklin. The head nurse was Nina Babanza/Babanzadeh/Babaanzadah (clearly people cannot spell her last name because I have been given all the listed spellings). My dad, a spunky, witty, fun, flirty, hilarious Alzheimer's patient went to the hospital with the flu. He weight 183 lbs. While at the hospital for a week he forgot he couldn't get up and go to the bathroom and fell, and like many elderly people, broke his hip. He was sent to rehab. Nina was the head nurse at that rehab. Nina did not have her staff well informed of my dad's condition and her staff picked up my dad like a baby having no idea of his broken hip. He was in horrific pain. It was unnerving and painful seeing how he was treated. At that rehab my dad was drugged out of his mind. Nina and her boss, the director, both tried to convince me that they were not dosing my dad, but multiple members of the staff admitted that to me under the table he was being medically restrained. When I confronted Nina on it, she would deny it then insinuate that drugs were the only way to protect him from "...falling on his head" and getting "a TBI". My dad was in Nina's facility for 2 1/2 weeks. His decline was shocking. They tried to make excuses that his decline was an advancement of his Alzheimer's but my dad had been reviewed by professionals before he was sent to her facility and even they mentioned how witty and funny he was and still had a life to live in an Assisted Living. Under the watchful eye of Nina he declined rapidly and never would return to his previous life. I could tell drugs were being used as they would wear off at times when I was present, and when they did he could engage, crack jokes, and behave more like his old self. When I would return he would again behave as if he was in a drugged stupor. He was often wet or soiled, left to sit in that filth, and often only wearing adult diapers from the waist down. Food and water would be dropped off and when not consumed due to his altered state, no assistance would be given, and the food would be removed never having been eaten. Nina never interceded on his behalf. He left his Assisted Living at 183 lbs and in 3 1/2 weeks upon returning to the hospital per my demand he weighed 155 lbs. The hospital records showed he was in complete kidney failure due to malnutrition and dehydration. Who was the head nurse managing his care? Nina. His brain was so dehydrated it stopped communicating with his body. Although they were able to restore his kidneys with fluids, his brain was too atrophied to survive, and my dad died a horrific and terrifying death. This all happened under Nina's watchful eye and that is the woman now working as a Health and Wellness Director at Brookdale. I had considered moving my dad to Brookdale before he died. Dad was never able to move anywhere because his life was cut short due to well documented negligence of the nursing staff that his Rehab with Nina at the helm. I would not consider ever placing your family member at a facility with her in employment. If you cherish your family member's life, it isn't worth the risk.
Update to my previous review… I’ve just learned that my grandmother (a Brookdale resident in NH) had her jewelry stolen from her apartment while she was away traveling to see family. My mother and aunt both confirmed the jewelry was in her room at the time she left for her trip. Upon return home, it was gone. The only people with keys are staff. Appalling! My grandfather gave her these pieces and they meant the world to her. Heartbroken for her. Previous review… I’m echoing the frustration left in the previous review. My grandmother has had extremely limited hot water for showers since she moved in October 2022. She’s kept records of the water temp using a thermometer and sent them to management. Our family has left numerous voicemails with corporate and sent letters. No one has gotten a reply.
BEWARE if you are considering Brookdale, we are terribly disappointed after just a few months, we were promised the moon and everything changed once we signed the contract. Understaffed and no communication with staff and corporate. The sales rep left the week we moved in, the activities director the next week, the executive director, the maintenance man and the housekeeping staff within the next two months. Call bells go unanswered, bathrooms never touched, rooms not cleaned, clothes not washed, really awful. AND then we get a letter stating there will be a price increase coming in January!! We aren’t even getting what we have been paying for and they expect more???? Oh and you can’t complain to corporate, they never answer the phone and when they do they hang up on you!!
