My mom has been at the Brookdale in frot Collins for almost three years now. It has changed drastically over the last three years... First, the food quality and choice has gone down hill. The residents always had several choices for each meal. Now it's no choice. Or limited choice at dinner. The quality is worse. Service is slow, because there is no kitchen staff. So, nurses, CNAs and care givers are now servers. Plus, the head chef has changed over half a dozen times. Second, they have gone through four activity directors. So, activities and fields trips rarely happen. If they go anywhere, it is a dollar store or good will... three years ago they would go to dairy farms, national parks, etc... Big difference. Third, the nursing director has also changed over half a dozen times. They can't keep nurses, CNAs or caregivers. I only recognize 3 caregivers from 3 years ago..... Forth, medicine is given by a Certified Med tech. This person preps all the meds twice a day, but gets paid about 20 bucks an hour. Yet the nursing home charges 1500.00 per resident per month. The resident has to still pay for their meds on top of this fee. If you use in house meds, through Omi care, you pay three times as much for the same meds at the pharmacy. So, the bill now become closer to 2000.00 a month depending on what the resident needs med wise. Let's do some math.... 50 residents X 1500 = 75,000 bucks per month Pay med tech who also operates as a CNA and care provider. 3 hours of prep and distribution of meds per day. 3 x 20= 60 bucks a day, for 30 days = 1800 bucks. Net profit for facility = 73,000 bucks. I know there is insurance costs, etc... but come on!! And I am leaving out the cost of the meds....lol Fifth, price....5,500 bucks per month. Then anything else is extra.... Sixth, no staff!! There is maybe 12 caregivers total. I also learned they cover BOTH units. Which shocked me. Which means three to five caregivers per shift are covering roughly 60 to 120 residents..... That in itself is scary!!! Seventh, the operations director has changed four times... I could go on.....and on.....and on...but sadly most care facilities are just as bad..... So, please do your research before you place your loved one in any facility. I would WAIT to see if this place gets its act together before placing your loved one here....
My wife and I tried to move my mother-in-law with dementia into our home and care for her, but learned very quickly that it was not working for any of us. Brookdale takes great care of her. It is going to be a tough adjustment for the person moving in and the family for putting him/her into memory care. Do not feel guilty or beat yourself up. Once my mother-in-law adjusted and got used to her new apartment, it was clear that Brookdale was the best place for her. She is happier at Brookdale than she was living with us. She has her cat, friends, and things to do. We still see her once a week. I am not sure what we would do without Brookdale.
Read carefully. If you are looking at Brookdale Fort Collins seriously to move your loved one into this assisted living facility, please only read reviews within the last 4 months. Do not read reviews past that as this facility has seriously declined over the last 9 months my Mom has lived there. I'd like to preface this review by saying I'm a reasonable person who did my research when me, my Mom and my brothers chose Brookdale Fort Collins for my Mom to move to less than a year ago. I'm not writing this to be vengeful or dishonest. I'm writing this so that families considering Brookdale Fort Collins will know better what to look for and questions to ask. Visit multiple, multiple times before making a decision. The managment has not been able to hire and/or retain "good" help. I feel really sorry for the employees who have remained there and are trying. I don't think the management knows how to properly train employees working in an assisted living facility. Employee turnover at every level is very concering. The dining and food quality has also really declined since we originally visited in June of 2023. We visited several times as we knew this was a BIG decision. As my Mom is very with it mentally, she wanted to communicate her concerns to the Assistant Director and not have her children fight her battles. This probably began in early November after moving into Brookdale Fort Collins in mid-September. We keep being told "they are working on it". Well, they need to get someone new to work on it because the management team there have not been successful at making any improvements. It keeps getting worse. There also seems to be several residents who don't belong in assisted living. I think a few of them (for their safety and safety of other residents as well) should be moved to memory care. Aren't assisted living facilities supposed to know how to assess people for this environment? It's not the job of the residents properly placed in assisted living to have to navigate on a daily basis, harmful actions (verbal and physical) of residents not properly placed just to keep themselves safe during meal times. Today was extreamly evident of that. Between waiting for over an hour just to have an order for a simple daily breakfast be taken (management/staffing issue), then to leave the dining room covered in water, coffee and food by a residnet mis-categorized as being able to live comfortably and civily with others is pretty much the breaking point for me. Part of this problem also is that on the weekends, the staff is reduced even below the "barely managable" week staff (management problem). Nobody even came over to help my Mom in the dining room until she had been covered in hers and other's drinks and meals. This is completely ridiculous and unacceptable. If not enough staff is available they need to have a better plan for serivce to the residents. I highly encourage you to visit several other facilities. My Mom is paying over $5,500 per month to live at Brookdale Fort Collins and that is with a "discount". Even an extra 30 minute drive to know your loved one is safe and actually getting value in the late years of their life would be worth it. Right now, more than $5,500 isn't. Period. Thanks for reading and considering. Do your research!
Brookdale is a clean and safe place for your loved ones. The staff is attentive, responsive and knowledgeable about how to support residences and their families on getting the care needed. I’d recommend Brookdale FC to anyone whose family member needs an Assisted Living facility.
