TL/DR: Lovely facility, great food, caring staff, capable of supporting changing levels of care over time. We moved our mother into Brightview in August 2023. She started in assisted living and has migrated over time to memory care. The dementia journey is not easy, and Brightview has been a partner to our family during this time. Each dementia case is different, and the Brightview staff and leadership have been gracious and provided advice that has made our mother's life easier than it would be otherwise. The staff are caring people, and they have learned how to work with all of the residents at the level of care and interaction that works best for each individual. The kitchen deserves a Michelin star. The food is so good that our mother, who complains about everything, has nice things to say. I have personally witnessed a resident order food and have precisely what they ordered put in front of them and claim that "this is not what I ordered." Without missing a beat the caregiver took it away and then got them what they asked for the second time. There was no correction or pushback, just a simple replacement. There are activities every day, outings once a week, and the facility is well cared for. The patio and grounds are lovely and quiet. During a recent snow storm the staff worked to make sure that coverage was sufficient and operations were smooth. Things with our mother have not always been perfect, which is more a result of her changes and expectations than the care BV provides. I will say without hesitation that BV has been open and transparent. I have never been concerned about her overall safety. The memory care staff ratio is higher than independent/assisted care, and this gives our mother a higher level of care, which is helpful. Our situation is somewhat out of the norm because we have elected to provide a private aide to keep mom company. The aides we have had via a contractor have told us that BV is the best facility they work in.
We just moved my mother in law out of here. It was great for her at first when she was still mobile, but as her need for care increased, Brightview was not able to give her what she needed. That’s fine, they are not a nursing care facility, and we knew that. The problem was that they kept insisting that they could continue to care for her. We waited too long to move her to a nursing facility because Brightview staff were not honest with themselves or us about what they could offer. They encouraged her to stay, presumably for the money. When we moved her out, we were disgusted to find mouse droppings under her chair and mouse traps and droppings in the closet.
We recently had my mom stay at the Annandale assisted living campus and so far she is thriving. The outdoor area is beautiful and the staff is caring and kind. She enjoys many of the activities- like tai chi and yoga and the evening movies. She has her meals with a group of ladies and says the food is very good! She carries the daily calendar with her and the routine and familiar faces give her a sense of security. We had tried another facility and Brightview is by far better in terms of space and daily quality of life. I enjoy visiting her there as well and hearing about her day - there are so many comfortable spots to sit and visit.
This is a beautiful place for your loved ones, situated on seven acres, with a lovely patio, varied activities and social events, plus gourmet meals.
