1853 Old Donation Pkwy, Virginia Beach, VA 23454, United States
Thankful for the friendly, kind, and considerate staff and the individualized approach to care. Largest memory care (that I’m aware of) in VB so residents have lots of space to walk around. Cathy the activity coordinator is a gem and keeps the residents occupied. Bay was so helpful with the transition and move in. The Nursing staff and Dr Kellam have been extremely caring. The kitchen crew worked out a meal plan to accommodate my sister’s unique needs. I leave trusting that the care my sister is receiving is kind and compassionate and am grateful for everyone that works at Arden Courts.

My mom is currently a resident at Arden courts, and I am so thrilled to be a part of this community. The staff totally understands memory care, and they are forever validating my mother’s fears as well as her joy, and do their best to engage her, especially when she is sundowning in the evenings. Believe me, those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, can exhibit to behaviors that need very specialized care. there are some top-notch staff members. CNA Jackie has been there since the beginning, and I’ve never known a more dedicated caregiver, who takes time for a smile and a hug to each and every Resident…. when no one‘s looking. The facility is very clean, the in-house therapy staff is excellent, and the facility physician, Dr. Kellam, an Internist, is truly amazing, involved, smart, and passionate. She is there two days a week, and is always willing to stop, smile, and listen to family members and to chat with the residents. Sandy, the director (and also an RN) has been there forever, and I so appreciate that consistency and her kindness. Bay is a very attentive and compassionate marketing Director. The nursing staff listens and has taken all my concerns into consideration in such a timely manner. There is an ice cream social every afternoon, including weekends at 1 PM…. Family members often come in then and gather and serve as a wonderful support network. I really know of no other facilities that has engaging memory care activities seven days a week! I personally travel a lot, but I am confident that when I am out of town that Arden Courts will take excellent care of all the residents, and I never need worry.
I'm going to start by saying that I haven't had anyone in residence there yet, but that's what makes this review so unique, and please pardon the length of it. My parents became unable to live safely in their own home about a year ago, so they moved to an assisted living facility near their home in Indiana. That was better than the house, but there were still a lot of issues that found me making a 14 hour each way drive about every 2 to 3 weeks plus hours a day on the phone straightening everything out from long term care insurance to how to use the TV remote. Finally, they decided to be brave and move to Virginia Beach, to live in my home with my family. They were starting to decline mentally, and I told them that they needed a long-term plan so I told them about Arden Courts. I am a musician and had played for the grand opening years ago, was blown away by the concept and was hoping it was still as nice. I went to visit, and it looked and felt the same as it did 20 years ago: pristine and full of life. During my tour I met Bay Armstrong whose exact job title I'm embarrassed to say I don't remember, but he works with families before and during their stay, to ensure a smooth transition and a wonderful experience there. He spent over an hour with me, never hurrying, and never pressuring me to commit. My parents ultimately put down a (very reasonable) deposit to reserve a place should they need it. I told Bay about our home situation and how we weren't sure they would ever move in, but he said it was fine. Since then, he has called me periodically to see how everyone is doing, and not in a salesman way but because he truly cares how we're doing. My father was hospitalized recently and needed home health care workers to help us out on his return home and lacking any connections, I called Bay to ask if he could recommend a company, which he gladly did, and they are wonderful as well. He has listened to my fears and concerns, and given me sound advice and peace of mind, all with no expectation of his company ever making a dime. That is truly rare, and I appreciate it so much. And, when the time comes (because it is coming whether I want to think about it or not) that they need placement, I am so pleased that they will be a part of this special community with so many caring people to make their lives safe, and fun. UPDATE: 04/25/2024 My parents had some medical issues in December that landed both of them in the hospital, after which it became clear that they needed more than we could give so they decided it was time for a move. They have been at Arden Courts for about 3 months now and I have to say that everything I saw and experienced before was exactly how it turned out. The staff is caring and patient, and works very hard to meet each resident where they are. This is especially important to me because although my mom has many challenges mentally, she is very high functioning and appreciates being given things to do that are more "on her level". Naturally, there is an adjustment period and there have been things that I wasn't totally satisfied with (nothing major), but each time I have brought a concern, it was met with an attitude of "that's not how it should be, so let's figure out how to fix it" and then they fixed it. Overall I am so pleased with the care my parents are receiving there and although I'm still their caregiver and still manage things for them, I can relax, knowing that the staff is making sure they are safe, engaged, and happy. I cannot say enough good things about this facility!
Every week I visit a friend and am delighted by the excellent, caring staff. My friend’s closest relative lives in MD, but staff have become her family. In the past week I learned the director (!) took it upon herself to buy my friend some makeup as she knows how much joy it brings. And it’s the nursing staff (!) who do the makeovers. This is a level of care that is truly impressive. I’m so grateful my friend has Arden Courts at this stage of her life.
We have found it to be very “stimulating” for my wife! She enjoys the residents, the activities and the very capable staff!
