I have never felt the need to write a review before but after meeting Maeve from Killarney nursing home I felt compelled to do so. My dad... fondly referred to as "grandaddy", was diagnosed with Alzheimer's earlier this year and was admitted to a nursing home outside of Killarney (his home town) 8 weeks prior to my visit home from overseas. In this home he was sectioned and locked away in the Dementia unit where he shared a room with an ensuite with two other men, the space was no bigger than a shoe box, he was reduced to drinking his tea from a plastic mug and eating his meals with a spoon. Coming to terms with the realisation that my dad would have to live his final years with this dreadful disease was hard, but what I found even harder to come to terms with was where his story was to end. The day I stumbled across the front door of Killarney nursing home I was at sixes and sevens with myself, I didn't know what to do or where to turn. Maeve showed me kindness and compassion and most of all she was true to her word. Within days of our meeting, my dad was sitting in his own private room with an ensuite, overlooking a beautiful garden, drinking his tea from a glass cup and saucer and eating his meals with a fork and knife. My dad was given his dignity back. So thank you Maeve and all the wonderful staff at Killarney nursing home for helping me on my mission of " saving private grandaddy"!
