Zostel Shangarh offers a serene escape nestled in the lap of untouched nature. The property boasts stunning views of the meadows and pine forests. Rooms are cozy and clean, perfect for solo travelers and backpackers. The vibe is peaceful, with friendly staff and chill common areas. It’s an ideal base to explore the raw beauty of Shangarh village.
Our first time Zostel stay as a couple here in Shangarh was a weird experience! The location is amazing, Food is good and even the private room has a great view. It all started when on the night of 16th April around 4:30 am, we heard footsteps and someone knocked the door. Clearly somebody out there was trying to open the door of our room early in the morning and it was dark outside. The attempt to open the door was heard clearly so I shouted loudly and the footsteps faded away but after 20 mins we could hear the footsteps and again the attempt to open the door. This time I shouted even louder and threatened! It stopped after this. Maybe someone was being mischievous out there but there are few points to highlight! Our floor lighting was very dim and we highlighted it to the staff but no action was taken, Room doors do not have enough latches which is a concern during such situations. We also highlighted this to the staff but the response wasn’t satisfactory. Request Zostel to check their cctv footage and check who it was! This is not a very kind experience for couples or even solo travellers looking at Zostel for a comfortable stay.
We stayed at Zostel Shangarh for one night on April 16, 2025, and unfortunately had a very concerning experience regarding safety. Firstly, our room (No. 303) had only one door stopper from the inside. The room is located down a narrow, separate passage with minimal lighting. At night, it was pitch dark—with a very dim light which didn't reach in front of our room and we had to use our phone torches. We informed the reception, and while they said they'd "get it checked," nothing was actually fixed. That night, there was heavy rain and thunder, and while the room itself was warm and comfortable, something deeply unsettling happened around 4:30 AM. We clearly heard footsteps outside our door, followed by someone trying to open it. At first, we assumed it could be a drunk guest or someone who was mistaken (although alcohol isn't allowed). But the attempt lasted for about two minutes—persistent and seemed to be deliberate. My husband called out from inside, asking "Kaun hai?" and the noise stopped. Disturbingly, the same thing happened again at 4:50 AM. This time too, the person tried the door and left only after we shouted again. Needless to say, this made us anxious, and we couldn’t sleep the rest of the night. We reported this to the receptionist in the morning, but it was taken casually. For context, we were a couple traveling alone—there was no chance this was a prank by a friend or someone we knew. Zostel is a well-known brand, and we expected a higher standard of safety. I sincerely hope the management takes this seriously. They should ensure double safety in doors, increase the security to prevent unauthorized access and ensure that entry passages are well lit-near all rooms. We absolutely loved Shangarh, the scenic location of the Zostel, and the food was great too. But this incident left a negative mark on our experience. If this had happened to two women instead, who knows how much worse it could have been if not handled well. I genuinely hope Zostel addresses this before someone faces a worse situation.
Explored this valley for the first time and stayed here for 2 nights in a dorm. Found good company with other travelers, kind staff and lovely doggos. The views are breathtaking and their kitchen provides the best food in the vicinity. Can't wait for the next visit during winters for the snow!
