On a recent trip to South Africa, I visited my close friend's husband who is suffering from advanced Alzeimers at Protea Memory Clinic.Whilst it is clear that this disease is extremely challenging, it was very obvious how well he is being cared for and the staff who were attentive, involved and engaged with all the residents. They are constantly being stimulated through various activities and the facilities are excellent. Aside from the excellent care that he is receiving which was obvious in his physical outlook, the emotional support, respect and care they have shown his family throughout the process of him needing to go into care, is highly commendable. Highly recommended in every possible way.

A most wonderful establishment that has shown nothing but care, empathy and support for my brother-in-law. The staff are fantastic and we are constantly amazed at the quality of care and respect they show for the patients in their care. There isn’t a better establishment in South Africa for caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s.
Protea Memory Clinic is one of the most beautiful establishments I have seen. The post last week by Caro Allum was totally out of line and preposterous to say the least. This person is clearly misinformed and misguided as there are Rules and Regulations in every medical institution across the country. I am sorry but I do not believe this post at all. Firstly, no facility would ever refuse time with parents, ever. In fact the statement about "sedation" is a fabrication and falsity as this would never be allowed. Medication is only given on doctors orders and only (RN) registered nurses administer medication. I for one have never ever heard of anyone "fighting for rights" to see a parent. The carers are all trained and do not just walk in off the street. I don't think most people actually understand the compassion, love and care that these patients are given on a daily basis. It is a calling, not a "duty" and these carers are very special people who are cut out for their duties they perform daily. Loads of patience, care and love goes into this job. We had my father at home in a hospital bed that we rented with a day/night nurse and it was an extremely challenging 3 weeks as his days/nights were reversed. We battled but this person makes wild sweeping statements as if she is witnessing "abuse" - nothing could be further from the truth. Defamation of a professional institution is a serious matter and by insulting this beautiful Clinic helps nobody and smacks of ingratitude. I would be so grateful if my father could have been there as I know he would have been in the best hands/care ever.
I had the pleasure of visiting my brother in law at PMC a number of times over the last week's and I have been beyond impressed by the facility. At no time ever will you see a patient unattended and more often than not there will be two. The manager is an absolute saint giving the kind of personal care that goes far beyond anything I can describe. Of course one only needs to visit PMC to see that anybody who has the incredible good fortune of being cared for there, are extremely lucky.
Caring, professional and friendly support. Beautiful, relaxing environment. The staff really go the extra mile and show love and compassion to all their residents and families. It's a tough journey but thrilled to be supported by professional people. Thank you!!
